Compact Kitchen Island

Dry fit toe-kick cabinetWe start off the day by milling out the parts needed for the toe-kick cabinet.  This is the base that the island sits on allowing space for your toes when you stand next to it to work.  Here we are dry fitting the completed parts.  No fancy joinery here, butt joints, screws and glue.

Glue and clamp toe-kick cabinetBecause Jim & Ruth want to be able to move the island when needed, we're going to install fixed casters under one end and adjustable levelers under the other.  Neither will be seen as we will leave only 1/4" gap between cabinet and floor.  But we must install pads now for the casters to be mounted to later, and they must be sturdy enough to take the weight of the cabinet, it's contents and anything they might choose to lay on top.

Position toe kickWith the toe kick complete, we position the assembly on the upside down cabinet and fasten it in place with screws.
