We start the day by completing yesterday's work. We remove the clamps, knock off the pips, and set up the sled to give the top it's final trim. Then we sand to 150 Grit and route a 45° chamfer along the upper edges and ease the lower edge just a little for a nice feel.
New we heft the monster and set it aside, out of harms way so we can work on other parts.
When I use up a pad of notebook paper I always keep the heavy card stock backer because they are good for making small templates. And that is exactly what I used to make a lay-out template to center and level the drawer pulls on the drawer fronts.
Because the pulls are hard metal and will not flex at all it is necessary to be sure the holes that the pulls stubs will fit into are in the exact right place. I hedge my bets just a tad by using a bit one size (1/32") larger than necessary. Larger than this and the handle can wiggle in its holes.
The screws that hold the pulls in place are a surface screw, not countersunk. On the real drawer front, which will mount tight against the drawer box, we must make room for these screws by counter boring recesses in the front of the drawer box. On the false fronts there is a small gap between the front and the stiffener panel; plenty of room for the screw heads.
Once the holes are all drilled, we plug them up with pulls, just to make sure they all fit, and they do. If any had gone awry, we'd have to "adjust" the holes with a rat tail file.
