The day starts with laying out holes for posts and dowels. To make the pencil marks more visible on the dark walnut wood I run strips of masking tape along the base plate where the lines of holes will go.
Then I take the base plate to the drill press and bore the holes at their locations. Care must be taken for only the corner posts have holes all the way through the base plate, all others go only part way through.
Finally I bore holes in both ends of the lower posts for dowels. The upper end will join to upper posts, the lower ends will join to the rockers. It is important to get the holes bored straight down the centerline of the posts or when the dowels are driven into the posts and these posts are joined to other parts the post will cant off at an angle. Especially where posts join other posts we want to keep them all lined up nice and straight.
