Glossary:
Laminated Stock

Some pieces of furniture, such as 4-post beds and garden benches will have parts that are too large to be cut from a single thickness of lumber.  There are two solutions to this problem.  One is to use thicker lumber, the other is to glue together the thinner lumber to build up the thickness needed.

Using thicker lumber means that there is no chance that a seam between layers would be visible, but large blocks of lumber are more prone to cracking and bending (bed posts) than if these parts are laminated up from thinner stock.  And thick lumber is a great deal more expensive than thinner lumber on a per board foot basis.  A 2" thick board can easily be 4 times the price of a 1" board the same width and length, even though its only twice as thick.  In some species a 4" or 6" inch thick board will be 10 times or more as much as a 1" thick board!

To keep prices as reasonable as possible, we calculate lumber and labor for using laminated parts where extra thick lumber is needed.  However, you have the option of specifying that only solid lumber blocks be used.  This is a special order item, and we will have to have your lumber specially milled for this project.  Make this request when you place the order and we will respond with an estimated price and time frame for using solid lumber.
