Quarter Sawn Lumber

Quarter Sawing is a special way of milling lumber so that the annular rings run perpendicular to the faces of the board.  There are two reasons for doing this:

  1. It almost entirely eliminates the chance that the board will cup as it ages.
  2. It brings out dramatic graining features in some wood species.  White Oak displays the distinct ray flecking pattern that is so prominent in authentic Mission furniture.
