This kitchen island was custom designed for Jim & Ruth in Salisbury NC.  They wanted a compact island that offered extra work space, storage, and a hidden place to keep their trash can.  Oh, yes, and they wanted it to perfectly match the existing cabinets in their kitchen.

Built of solid red oak with a maple butcher block top, the table features one deep drawer, a storage cabinet with one adjustable shelf under that and a trash can cabinet with a swing-in drop-door for easily depositing trash.  All four doors are operational.  The top is treated with a food safe penetrating oil so it can be used as a cutting board.  It's also excellent for rolling dough.

To match the existing cabinetry, Jim & Ruth opted to have us stain the oak Harvest Wheat.  We finished the cabinet in clear lacquer, then added a flooring quality polyurethane to the inside of the trash compartment so that it would stand up to frequent washings.

A robust work center island can improve most any large kitchen's usability.  The top of this work table is 30" wide with an 8" overhang on one side so it can double as a breakfast bar or writing area.  It offers 3 deep drawers for stashing kitchen utensils, and a base cabinet for large pots or small appliances.  The work center island shown is made of solid Maple with a hand rubbed oil finish.  The top is treated with a food safe penetrating oil so it can be used as a huge cutting board.  It's also excellent for rolling dough.

We built this Matthew Burak design of solid cherry to make an elegant yet understated work table that will be at home in any kitchen.  Built with old-world joinery, this will surely become a family heirloom.

The table features two deep drawers with antique brass knobs.  Finished in clear lacquer, we do not recommend that you use this table as a chopping block or cutting board.
