This bench / shelf combo is a custom design built for Carolyn V. and her husband Bill, who wanted a place in their entry way where he could sit to put on and take off his shoes, and to leave wet raincoats and such to dry a bit.  Carolyn sent me a photo of a bench / shelf that they liked, but it was built of pine and would be shipped to them knocked down in a flat box and would need to be assembled before use.  They preferred a piece of quality furniture that would stand up to constant use for years and years.  This piece is what we agreed upon.
